You may or may not realize that some recyclables don’t make it all the way through the recycling process to become new products. Sometimes they take one-way detours to landfills instead. Here’s what contamination is, how it affects recycling, and what you can do to help. When recyclables are contaminated, it means that unacceptable materials have made their way into the bin. To make sure your recyclables are not contaminated:
- Keep all non-recyclable materials out of the bin.
- Properly sort the materials according to the City of Gunnison's recycle sorting guidelines, click here to see the Recycle Sorting Guide.
- Keep any materials soiled with food, grease, or other liquids out of the bin.
Following these steps will give your recyclables the best chance of a second life.
